Best of Outright Weekly Roundup: State of the Union 2013 Edition

Small business owners everywhere were upset with the State of the Union – but why? Plus, why you should finally make the leap you’ve always wanted to make with your business and much more in this week’s round-up.

Small Business News of the Week

The State of the Union came and went, and many small business owners felt that the President didn’t spend nearly enough time talking about small business. In fact, the consensus seems to be that he only went over broad business topics like immigration reform, trade, and energy policies, all of which he’s covered before.
Where was the talk about ways to spur on further developments in the small business world? A little was mentioned on business taxes and their complicated nature, but that was about it when it came to fiscal challenges for business owners.
Of course the big news for businesses during the speech was the President’s proposal to raise the minimum wage to $9 an hour. Of all the issues to potentially be raised, this has the chance to affect business owners quite a bit.
What did you think about the State of the Union speech? Are you like other small business owners and think the President should’ve spent more time on your interests? How much will a minimum wage raise affect your company?

Outright Pro Tip: Stop Predicting the Future

Every business owner, freelancer, or financial expert wants to believe they can predict the future. You see the trends, you watch the market, you think you know what’s coming around the corner. And, to a certain degree, it’s possible to at least get an idea of what’s going to happen if you get certain gears rotating.

However, there comes a point when you’re too worried about the future and not spending any time on the present! If you’re always trying to predict the future and worrying how what you’re doing now will change your business for years to come, you’ll never actually do anything out of fear.

Sure, it’s vital to consider your actions, both in the business world and otherwise. But if you had weighed the options so heavily when getting into business, would you ever have made that leap? Probably not, considering the weakened business environment. Once in a while you have to stop considering and start trusting your gut.

That’s it for this week’s Round-Up!
