Best of Outright Weekly Roundup: Presidential Debates Edition

The presidential debates kicked off Wednesday night, and one of the big topics was small business. How did you think the candidates did? Plus, small biz owners are concerned with sales tax, and there are some misconceptions we came across while at SCOE Seattle. What are they and how do they affect you? All this and more in this week’s round-up!

Small Business News of the Week

Well the first presidential debate came and went. Romney and Obama squared off Wednesday night to blast each other on economic policies including health care and small business. Both had interesting viewpoints on what they’re going to do the next four years. Obama says he’s reduced taxes on small business 18 times before as well as implemented other programs, and Romney says small businesses are on the decline and need to be focused on even more as they are the backbone of America. He wants more small businesses to be able to hire new employees which just isn’t the reality right now.

Small business owners were naturally really interested in this portion of the debate as it all concerns them. The media seems to be in agreement that Romney “won” the debate. However, what do the small business owners think? Did either one make valid points? Who do you think can boost the small business economy during the next term?

Outright Pro Tip: Sales Tax Concerns

Last weekend we went to Sellers Conference for Online Entrepreneurs in Seattle and met lots of great folks in the ecommerce industry. We also came across lots of interesting information from experts in the field.

One tidbit we learned was that sales taxes were big on everybody’s mind. Sellers were unaware that FBA fulfillment locations constitute “nexus,” thus requiring them to set up sales tax. Of course this information caused an uproar as everyone was suddenly concerned about changing their entire ecom model!

Many sellers were concerned how they could stay competitive. Before you do anything else, check out our Sales Tax Resources for Sellers in Every State. Now you can be sure you are registered to properly collect sales tax in every state where you have nexus. (Remember: That includes FBA fulfillment centers!)
